Gouache and India Ink on Paper     Whether created from an original template, or created through action or expressionism, I employ the respect, reflection, confidence and intuition necessary to execute my works.  I approach the blank paper with equal parts detachment and subjectivity and therefore I can never predict what will come through.

The Traditional Native American Artists of the Northwest Coast work with templates.  Each template may have more than one function in any given piece, "...[lending] itself to the creation of visual puns in which a particular form can be read simultaneously as part of two different, overlapping images.  Northwest Coast Artists [use this technique] to play on fundamental philosophical perceptions of stuctural dualities, the deceptiveness of appearances, mythic processes of transformation, and the paradoxical coexistence of two truths at a single juncture of time and space." [Berlo, Janet and Ruth Phillips. (1998). Native North American Art. Oxford University Press: New York. (p.186).]

These philosophical concepts are at the very heart of my work and are ultimately the inspiration behind it.

Puzzle 2007.
